Tanuj Jhunjhunwala
CEO
Tanuj Jhunjhunwala is the Chief Executive Officer & heads business development, marketing and fund raising at Planys. He is a 2014-batch alumnus from IIT Madras with Btech in Mechanical Engineering and Masters in Product Design. His Master’s research on “Underwater Remote Operated Vehicle for Structural Health Monitoring of Submerged pipelines” was awarded the ‘Bhagya Lakshmi and Krishna Iyenger Award’ (Best Masters’ thesis) along with ‘JC Bose Patent award’ at IITM Convocation 2014. More recently, Tanuj was featured on the highly acclaimed ‘Forbes 30 under 30 2021 Asia List’ under the category ‘Industry, Manufacturing & Energy’.
Here is his story in his own words:
“Robotics has fascinated me since childhood, my time at my university enabled me to explore the realm of robotics. I built robots for fun and gradually found my calling of developing indigenous, cost efficient and cutting-edge robotic solutions for the tech-starved Indian industry. Apart from being a practical nerd at college, I enjoy backpacking and hiking, running half marathons, a cricket fanatic and a numismatist.
Post-graduation, I worked for an Indian automotive giant, but the monotony & lack of innovation made me quit in 4 months. In 2015, I co-founded Planys, a tech Startup pioneering in the field of Marine Robotics and advanced underwater structural health monitoring testing. The impact we have already created in a very traditional market is superlative and we have barely scratched the surface!
I am very proud of the young energetic dynamic team of experts we have put together who are bringing Indian robotic prowess to the forefront. Planys stands tall as an inspiring story of determination, grit & unwavering resilience for the world to see! In the forthcoming years, we wish to continue leading the paradigm shift in the underwater industry on a global level.”

Vineet Upadhyay
CTO
Vineet is the Chief Technology Officer currently leading the product development, technology management, implementation, scale-up and R&D at Planys Technologies. He is a Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. Before co-founding Planys, he served as a research associate at the Dept. of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras where he developed the control system of an indigenously developed underwater glider. While pursuing engineering he was the founding team leader of IIT Madras' Student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) team which went on to represent India at the International RoboSub Competition, San Diego, USA after winning the national championship in the year 2014.
Here is his story, in his own words:
“I co-founded Planys to develop technology that can help in realisation of potential held by the Oceans. I envision Planys’ technology down the line would be a world-leading enabler of human sustainability and economy using Oceans as a medium. Today, our venture is the initial few steps into its great journey ahead.
I realise entrepreneurship was ingrained into me during my upbringing as I grew-up watching my father bring a swimming-sport revolution in my ancestral village, nurturing local kids as national swimmers. Being a passionate hobby swimmer with fond love for computers, robots, and science, I chose to study Ocean Engineering. I continued honing my robotics and team-work skills, led teams across national and international robotics competitions, which fuelled my motivation.
With a strong belief that oceans are yet to be explored for their full potential, I incessantly explored business opportunities in this domain, and started with maritime inspections using submersible robots. Our technology today contributes to ensuring Dams do not collapse, bridges remain safe, large ships transport cargo timely, Oil & Gas industry functions safely and divers don’t risk their lives anymore.
It has been a challenging but satisfying journey of developing products indigenously, being the first OEM in India and leading my organization in an uncharted space. I cherish the success and appreciation of our indigenous technology in advanced countries of Europe, which bolsters our confidence. I take pride in leading one of the best technology teams in my country which keeps pushing the frontiers as the clock ticks!”
